A Good Fixer Upper House Starts with Good Planning
by Kate Jannetta
It is not uncommon to find your dream home, purchasing it and then being faced with the process of renovating it. The renovating process can be a draining experience so it is important to make sure you plan everything out a head of time.
Just like most things, renovating has a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning stage would be planning, the middle stage should be implementation and lastly, the end stage is decorating.
Planning Your House Renovation
Planning is hands down the most important aspect of the renovating process. You need to think about what you are trying to achieve, your budget, time lines, and any other things that may not be in your hands, such as weather.
Structural issues should be the first to be addressed, as the weather can affect this. You need to consider timing when renovating these projects and keep weather conditions in mind. If you need a new roof, it would be best to prioritize this, because rain and dampness can cause the roof to rot quickly, which can cause extensive damage. Part of planning is to know how to prioritize your needs, and obviously structural issues such as the roof should take priority over replacing your kitchen cabinets.
Planning wisely is also another important factor when it comes to renovating your new fixer upper home. If you need extensive work done and require several different contractors to complete your electrical work, plumbing, windows etc. make sure you plan correctly and do not schedule them to come all at the same time. They can get in each others way, which will only cause frustration on there part and yours as well.
Lastly, decorating your newly renovated home can be the most rewarding process of these three steps. This is the part when you know your renovation has come to and end and your home is ready for your own style and personality. Your painting, furnishings and accessories will be the final touch in making your new dream home just that; New!
