If you’re looking for a council that listens to both residents and businesses and is available to explain where your tax dollars are going, Langley city could be “the place to be” for you.
That’s what your Board of Directors and Government Relations committee members found out when they met with the Langley City mayor, council and senior staff on October 24. A number of topics were discussed, including transportation, crime, natural disasters, the new casino and the city’s public image.
City representatives reported that they are very much involved in activities to make the community a better place to live. For example, staff are working closely with the township on transportation issues that affect both municipalities and staff have joined a task force looking at how a port expansion could affect traffic.
When it comes to preparing for natural disasters, Sheena Vivian, an emergency coordinator for both Langley municipalities, said she updates an all hazard emergency plan that’s been in place for 10 years. The plan includes details on evacuation, emergency reception centres, training for new city staff and a 200-member volunteer group that can be mobilized when needed.
Speaking of volunteers, the city is always on the lookout for new members on various council committees including the Communities in Bloom Committee.
Mayor Marlene Grinnell says, “The program is not about the work of city staff and it’s not about flowers, it’s about bringing people together to make the community a good place to be and it really makes the city shine.”
In order to enhance the city’s public image further, Langley City recently launched a new initiative to promote the city as “the place to be.” A new logo and song are available for use by everyone in the community, to attract visitors, shoppers, businesses and others to see what the city has to offer. To get more information on this initiative or to download the new logo, go to www.city.langley.bc.ca.
At the conclusion of the meeting with the Fraser Valley Board, Mayor Grinnell said, “I really appreciate the opportunity to meet with Realtors and I hope these kinds of meetings continue. If Realtors need help, I hope they feel comfortable approaching us.”
Although Mayor Grinnell decided to step out of local politics by not running in the recent municipal election, she will remain active in her community. She told the Board, “it will be up to the new council to continue to make Langley City “the place to be.”
