Subdivision turned down

Six houses on a one-acre parcel would normally not be out of place in Walnut Grove. But Roger and Yole Mallory's proposal failed to get to the first bylaw reading on Nov. 8.
It is rare for council to defeat subdivision applications, but in this case the difference for a majority of council members was the size of surrounding parcels.
The application was to subdivide 1.02 acres at 20486 93A Ave. where the Mallorys live in the only house on the site.
The surrounding parcel sizes range in size from one third of an acre to an acre. The area is in the first phase of Walnut Grove's development.
A report to council stated that the Walnut Grove Community Plan designates the site as low density residential which allows a density of eight units per acre.
"It appears to be quite a change from surrounding properties," Councillor Howie Vickberg commented.
"I, too, have difficulty with the size of the lots," said Mayor Kurt Alberts, who voted against it, with Councillors Vickberg, Jordan Bateman, Steve Ferguson and Charlie Fox.
