Minister Rich Coleman on housing policy in BC
With the fall legislative session over and Christmas upon us, it’s been close to six months since Premier Gordon Campbell appointed a new cabinet and I became the province’s Minister Responsible for Housing.
Since that appointment there have been some substantial changes in housing, beginning with consolidation of responsibility in a single ministry so that we can provide better service to British Columbians. If someone needs access to subsidized housing or emergency shelter, needs information on building safety, the BC Building Code, warranty protection for a new home, or needs help in resolving a landlord tenant dispute, they come to this ministry. With a streamlined structure, we can ensure that changes to the system don’t have unintended consequences.
We have also expanded the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program, nearly doubling the budget, increasing rent ceilings for the first time in 15 years, and including seniors who pay ‘pad rental fees’ in owner-occupied manufactured homes. This program allows low income, healthy seniors to stay in their homes in the private market so that the province can direct non-market housing to those most in need.
We are also working on a new Provincial Housing Strategy, to be released in the coming year. I’m excited about the opportunities and innovative initiatives it will bring to affordable housing and homelessness. As one of the most significant points of contact that most people have with the housing market, REALTORS® will no doubt have an interest in this strategy as it is implemented. I look forward to telling you more and working with you in the future.
