Provincial priorities - BC REAL ESTATE ASSOCIATION
The new legislative session was launched February 14 with the speech from the throne. It acknowledged that a housing strategy for the province would be implemented during this session, in addition to initiatives to improve health care, education and the commercial and resource sectors. A major campaign to raise public awareness of the negative impact of crystal methamphetamine and funding to support prevention and treatment programs were also promised.
In a 2004 brief to government, BCREA recommended the consolidation of housing responsibilities under one roof and the development of a provincial housing strategy. In 2005, the government established a stand-alone housing department and has now committed to the introduction of a housing strategy in support of people in greatest need.
BCREA commends the government for these measures and believes maintaining a healthy housing economy requires a balanced approach that supports the needs of both the social and market sides of the housing sector.
It’s also worth noting that the government categorized its housing strategy and crystal methamphetamine commitments under the title Transforming British Columbian’s Quality of Life.
This is a perfect fit with BCREA’s Quality of Life philosophy, which the Association uses as a way to establish common ground with government officials and staff. Under the philosophy, BCREA supports growth that encourages economic vitality, provides housing opportunities and builds better communities with good schools and safe neighbourhoods.
